A
proposal for supplementary characters in Unicode:
Medieval Nordic
Subrange
9: Precomposed abbreviational
characters
This range
includes a number of precomposed abbreviated
characters, typically an ordinary base line
character with a bar across. These characters may
also be described in a composite way, using the
combining character "bar" introduced in subrange 8.
However, for pragmatic reasons this range includes
some of the most frequent combinations.
This list can
become very long, as amply demonstrated in Adriano
Cappelli, Dizionario di Abbreviature latine ed
italiane (6th ed., Milano: Ulrico Hoepli,
1979). It is therefore strongly recommended that it
is kept down to the most frequent combinations, and
that abbreviations as a rule are described as a
sequence of base line character + combining
character, using the inventory in subrange
8.
This character may occur in the primary sources,
but has not been positively attested.
